Domaine Thomson began in 2000 when David and PM Hall-Jones purchased their block in Central Otago, naming it after David’s great great grandfather “Surveyor Thomson” who explored and mapped Central Otago in the 1850’s. The pair immediately began to plant the first vineyards with a mixture of Davis and Dijon Pinot Noir clones inspired by their mutual love for Burgundy. At 45° South, Domaine Thomson’s spectacular elevated site above the valley floor has 360-degree views of the Cromwell Basin and Lake Dunstan, framed by the Dunstan and Pisa Mountain ranges and the St Bathans Mountains further beyond. Growing just one variety, a “single vineyard” Pinot Noir. The relatively frost-free, warm mesoclimate and free draining soils provide ideal grape-growing conditions, producing an excellent concentration and intensity of flavours.

Domaine Thompson ‘Surveyor Thomson’ Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021 View Tasting Notes

On the nose there are dark blackberries, spice, violets and wild herb aromatics. The palate is medium bodied with an beguiling mix of red fruits and savoury notes and a soft elegantly textured mouthfeel showing good structure, density and length. This is a complex, high energy wine that is perfect to enjoy in its youth or to patiently cellar.
